What’s The Difference Between Balayage & Ombré?

Balayage hair colour tends to be subtler than ombré.  It is based around a few sections of highlights being added through your roots to give a denser colour towards the tips of your hair. Ombré gives a more defined two-tone effect, with darker roots becoming lighter towards the ends.

The word balayage comes from the French word which means “to sweep.”  It involves colour being swept or hand painted through your hair to create a bespoke look. This free-hand technique means colour can be applied exactly where you want it for a subtler effect than that achieved with traditional foil highlights.

Ombré hair colour is similar to root stretching or colour melting. It involves the root colour is deliberately left darker before gradually fading to a lighter colour towards the ends.  If you are feeling adventurous you could opt for a fashion coloured ombré such as silver-grey, purple, or lavender.

How Are Balayage Highlights Applied?

The balayage colour is hand painted into your hair.  It is applied finely close to the roots, with more colour being gradually added towards the ends of the hair.   Our skilled colourists can focus on the areas where the sun would typically lift your hair colour if you’ve been on holiday, resulting in a natural sun-kissed look. A toner may also be added to your hair to achieve the perfect shade you want.

Can Balayage Be Created On All Hair Colours?

Absolutely! Balayage can be created on all shades of blonde, brunette, red or even grey hair. Blonde balayage is a very popular look which can be created in a range of colours.  Y from on-trend buttery blonde to silver-platinum and more.  We can create fabulous effects with just about any colour, so speak to your stylist for more advice. Balayage is a great way to try out the trend for pastel hair colours, or add vivid moneypiece highlights.

Are Balayage and Ombré Hair Colours Easy To Maintain?

Balayage is a low-maintenance hair colour as your root regrowth will be less noticeable than with traditional foils or an all-over hair colour. You can expect to see your colourist around every 12-14 weeks to maintain your balayage highlights. We’d also recommend a 6-weekly colour glossing touch-up to freshen up your hair between appointments.

Will Ombré or Balayage Damage My Hair?

Our highly trained team understand exactly how your hair will respond to the colouring process and how to apply the colour to achieve the look you want. We can also protect the strength and condition of your hair during the process by using a conditioning and hair strengthening treatment. We may recommend using an OLAPLEX treatment, which is added to your hair during the colouring process.
