Is hair colouring right for me?

«

Getting your hair professionally coloured is always a great way to enhance your natural look, but before you go ahead, you need to ask yourself if you are ready for the upkeep and maintenance needed. Be realistic about the amount of time and effort you're prepared to put into creating and maintaining your chosen colour and this will help you and your hairdresser decide which hair colour technique and shade will suit best suit your needs.

We've all seen amazing hair transformations on Instagram, but book a hair colour consultation, and your Kevin Joseph colour expert will be able to give you a realistic picture of what will be involved in achieving your chosen look. This will depend on your starting colour as well as the condition of your hair. If your hair is highly processed and damaged, we can work with you to improve its condition and devise a programme to get to your desired new look.

We're a Wella Ambassador salon so you can be sure you are in the safest possible hands for your hair colour at Kevin Joseph.

Which hair colour will suit me best?

«

Different shades will suit different skin tones better than others and your colourist can help you decide which will work best for you. The best colour may also depend on how much time and effort you want to put into the transformation. For example, it may be easier to try some natural looking blended balayage highlights to start with. Alternative, a warm all over tint to blend in some grey might be just what you need before progressing on to a bigger change.  The choice is yours though of course and we can help you navigate your way through the wide range of choices available to you.

Bring in some images of hair colours you like and your colourist can help you achieve the look. It's always a good idea to have some images from Instagram or Pinterest, then both you and your colourist can be clear exactly which shade you mean.

Do I need an allergy test before I have my hair coloured?

«

Yes, a skin patch test is essential before your first hair colour appointment and if you haven't had your hair coloured with us for 6 months or more. This is so we can test for any allergies to the hair colour products that we use.

There's no need to book an appointment because the test takes only a few seconds, but we can't colour your hair without a record of a skin test being done. All we will do is dab a small amount of colour product behind your ear which you should wipe away after 30 minutes (or sooner if it feels itchy or sore). If you have had no reaction within 48 hours, then we can go ahead with your hair colour.

If you suffer from sensitive skin we can recommend ammonia-free hair colour products which are designed to cause minimum stress to the hair's cuticle.

Should I choose temporary or permanent hair colour?

«

Temporary Hair Colour - As the name suggests, you can expect a temporary hair dye to wash out after a few shampoos. This might be the perfect option if you are new to hair colour and aren’t sure yet if it’s for you. It's important to remember, though, that you can only go darker than your natural colour with temporary hair colour. If you want to lighten your hair, you will need a semi-permanent or permanent hair dye or bleach.

Semi-Permanent Hair Colour - You can achieve longer-lasting colour with a semi-permanent shade, which wash out more gradually over several shampoos. This works particularly well if you just want to subtly boost your natural hair colour or cover your first grey hairs. Bright fashion colours also tend to be semi-permanent - great if you aren't too sure about taking the plunge with that vivid magenta!

Permanent Hair Colour - Permanent hair dye works by lifting up the cuticles along every hair shaft and placing the colour deep within each strand. Your colour will be permanent meaning it will not wash out. As your hair grows, your roots will need to be touched up, usually every six to eight weeks or so, depending how fast your hair grows.

What is balayage?

«

Balayage is a very popular hair colouring technique that involves the colour being hand-painted painted onto chosen sections of the hair. It comes from the French meaning "to sweep". Balayage can give your hair instant brightness with a lighter colour being used toward the ends, leading up to slightly darker roots. Face-framing balayage highlights are very much on-trend and flattering to everyone. They also have the advantage of being low maintenance as root re-growth is far less obvious than with some other hair colouring techniques. So what's the difference between balayage and ombré? Ombré is a technique that offers a simpler, two-tonal contrast from the roots to the tip of the hair. The roots are typically darker than the tips, making it another low maintenance style. By contrast, balayage offers a subtler and more multi-dimensional result.

What's the best way to hide my grey hair?

«

If you love your natural hair colour but just wish it looked a bit richer and healthier, you could try highlights or lowlights. These are also a really good way to blend in grey hairs, giving a multi-textured look. The colour experts at Kevin Joseph can find exactly the colour combination to suit you best. When adding regular highlights, we will wrap sections of hair in foil and apply the hair colour (or add it free hand with a brush if you choose balayage or ombre. You could also try a block colour or all over tint, which is a great way to completely cover grey hair. Bear in mind it will need to be touched up every 4-6 weeks whereas with highlights, the regrowth is usually less noticeable.

What do I need to know before trying a bright, fashion hair colour?

«

If you're longing to free your inner mermaid, or go all out for unicorn hair, we can make your fashion hair colour dreams come true!

Before you start though, you need to be aware that achieving a really vivid hair colour can involve a lot of work. Bright fashion colours work best on blonde or pre-lightened hair.

It's really important to leave this process to a professional who can lighten your hair safely, without damaging the condition. It takes time and precision to achieve a multi-tonal rainbow look, so be aware that you may need several appointments to achieve the final result.

Fashion hair colours are semi-permanent, meaning that they will fade over time.  This can result in a beautiful, on-trend pastel shade.  Nonetheless, we'd recommend investing in some professional hair care products to preserve your beautiful vivid colour.

How should I look after my colour treated hair?

«

Once you've had your hair coloured you'll want to keep it looking as glossy and vivid as when you leave the salon. At Kevin Joseph, caring for your hair colour starts as part of the dyeing process itself. We can add a specialist Olaplex treatment to protect the bonds of the hair from damage resulting in stronger, healthier-feeling hair that holds its colour for longer.

Speak to your stylist about our range of Wella professional hair care products too.  We will be happy to recommend the ideal home care product for your hair type.
